Something sounds interesting with the cord blood. This is what connects a mother and a child physically as well as emotionally. After the baby is born this is just flushed into the bin. But the best part is its life giving potentiality.
This is the placental blood (blood from the child) that is also called as the umbilical cord blood (umbilical cord- the pipeline that connects mother to child). When the baby is born, doctor cuts this tube, after that a certain amount of blood remains in the blood vessels of the placenta (initial growth stage of the child inside mother’s womb). This is what attaches to the umbilical cord.
What is it full of;-
Known to contain completely the normal elements of blood, which are the red blood cells, white blood cells, plasma and the platelets. At the same time this is what is rich in hematopoietic stem cells (responsible for blood cells formation). Their site of synthesis is the bone marrow (core substituent from which blood cells is born) for which they are best to be transplanted.
On the other way the placenta is the best source of stem cells (the initial cells that lead to develop other body cells) as being containing more than 20 times of hematopoietic cells (blood cells) than the normal cord blood cells.
This does not have any risk factor as the cord blood is left in the umbilical cord and placenta. Relatively easy to collect without any effect on health of mother or the child. These are the rare cells that are normally found in the bone marrow.
Coming to the treatment, this is a natural creator that relates to the treatment of various diseases as like;-
- This is what is used to treat children with cancerous blood disorders like that of leukemia.
- For various kinds of genetic diseases this is also effective as like with the fanconi anemia.
- Treatment of various kinds of immunity related disorders.
Cancer treatments –
Cancer is becoming a serious problem with the growing concern for treatment.
A child of 10 years was suffering from blood cancer. The best part was its detection at an early stage. Later the doctor said that if there is any sibling (blood related brothers and sisters) existing they can transfer.
How is the cord blood cell used today;-
Today with the growing science, cord blood stem cells have created their identity to treat more than 80 diseases. These include a lot like that of cancer, genetic disorders and blood disorders.
With the process, the transplantation of stem cells is infused into patient’s blood stream. This is where they travel to heal and repair the damaged cells and tissues. After a successful transplantation, quite a healthy and active immune system is being created.
