The stage is alarming and a definite cause of worry. Parents refusing vitamin K for new born is not something new and this is not the last time as well. This could lead to a higher chance of internal bleeding in the brains or the intestines of the little ones.
One of the important nutrients of the human body is vitamin K that leads to the formation of blood clots. In older children or kids this would be found in the established system of adults along with children. This does not appear to be the case with infants. The worst part is that in case of breast milk you are not likely to avail a lot of vitamin K that would probably ward off the deficiencies of the same.
In addition to the bleeding aspect, such babies are known to possess specks of blood in their stool. It could lead to the shortage of red blood cells or it could go by the name of anaemia. For this specific cause it does become important in countries like US for the babies to receive a shot of vitamin K once the baby happens to be born.
It has been found out that vitamin K does not pass through the placenta, so even if you happen to supplement your baby with breast milk at this time the deficiency is bound to occur. With vitamin K it might not reach out to the breast milk as well. The chances are that babies who are exclusively breastfeed may have higher chances of vitamin K deficiency. There has been a thought in terms of repeated oral supplementation of vitamin K. But this has not gone on to yield the desired results in terms of the injection given at the time of birth. In terms of side effects it does appear to be mild and more at the sight of injection.
As far the reasons for refusal of New born vitamin K is concerned you could confer that it grew out of a myth. A lot of parents were of the opinion that there was a strong relation between leukaemia and vitamin K. But this data did not find any source in the follow up studies as well. In a lot of ways this was a similar situation that did occur between autism and the MMR scan.
The trend among the parents is that they tend to ignore natural birthing experiences. This would mean that they refuse an epidural and then take the baby home without obtaining the necessary vaccines as well. It is suggested that you do ask the doctor a lot of questions and what about a healthy experience as far as the health of the baby is concerned. If the thought arises that you would need to refuse the vaccines then do thing about the pros and cons first. Do not adopt a strategy that some other parent is doing, so too I will follow the path.
